Why the 1 percent prefers austerity

Consider publicly funded elections

Paul Krugman’s column makes excellent points [“The elite’s preference for austerity,” Opinion, April 27]. One important point left out is that nothing will happen to stop the preference for austerity until people stop electing politicians who only do the bidding of the rich and powerful.

Publicly funded elections would go a long way toward taking the money out of the process. That is not likely to happen anytime soon, sorry to say.
