UW prof builds sundial in home

Sundials help us connect with our surroundings

Woody Sullivan shows off the sundial on the ceiling of his garage. An artist drew the ceiling lines after Sullivan calculate dthe angles. To reflect sunlight onto the dial, he mounted a mirror on the windowsill. Sullivan had a hand in creating half of the 26 or so public sundials in this area. (Greg Gilbert / The Seattle Times)

At a time when most of the news items express all the negative sides of humanity, this article shows an ingenious Seattleite who builds a great sundial in his garage in a city that is known to be quite cloudy [“Seattle’s ‘Mr. Sundial,’ page one, May 15]. Great choice.Sundials invite us to stop for a moment and connect with our surroundings. In an age where we are constantly rushing from one place to the other, where we are constantly using our smartphones to update our statuses or email our colleagues, this story shows that there are still people out there that care about the history of things and take the time to share their passion with the world today.
