The drone debate

End drone use

Eric Holdeman’s guest column on drones protecting the public begins with the same old argument: “We live in a dangerous world,” and because we have experienced another “terror attack,” and there are others who wish to do us harm, we need to implement further police-state restrictions. This post 9/11 political construct is flawed both socially and morally [“Drones, cameras can protect public,” Opinion, May 1].

With more than 2,000 people assassinated by drones to date, and with tremendous civilian casualties because of their use, I do not see a safer world, but rather a world in which the emotion of terror is becoming commonplace, in part because of our own conduct. Millions of citizens of the world must now cower in fear when they hear objects flying overhead.

I do not accept a future where our children look to the sky and see drones patrolling, and I believe we should resist a world in which every block has a video camera. We should hold firm to these principles because both history and common sense tell us that a society in which there is no public trust is a dying one. Let us seize the moral imperative to end the use of drones now.
