Chinese company to buy Smithfield

Be wary of labels

Smithfield Foods is one of the nation's biggest pork producers. The company says a sale to Shuanghui International is a chance to export smithfield brands into new markets. (The Associated Press File, 2011)

The Smithfield CEO says the sale of his company will open up the Chinese market to the U.S. market [“Smithfield being sold to Chinese meat firm,” Business, May 30]. Who is he trying to fool?By buying Smithfield, China has access to export some of their adulterated-meat products into our market. Watch your labels carefully. It seldom works to our advantage.
