A day in the life of a judge

Not as easy as it looks

Kudos to Chief Criminal Judge Ronald Kessler for offering all of us a glimpse into the daily life of a judge [“A view from the bench,” page one, June 5].It is easy for us to to be armchair quarterbacks in situations where things go awry in judicial matters, and it is a great reminder to us all that judges are human beings trying their best to balance the rule of law, the rights of defendants and the safety of the public at large.

I find it reassuring that smart, well-balanced people like Judge Kessler are there to weigh the pros and cons of allowing second chances, even though, like the rest of us, they are occasionally proved wrong.
