Magnuson Park contamination

Transparency is important

State Rep. Gerry Pollet has expressed concern with a plan to clean up several radiological hot spots — like the area around building 12 in background — found at Magnuson Park, a former naval station. (Dean Rutz / The Seattle Times)

I found the article about the discovery of radiation contamination in Seattle disturbing for several reasons [“Public not told some parts of Magnuson Park tainted,” NWThursday, May 30].The Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation, the state Department of Ecology and the Navy withheld that information from the public for four years. Now, upon revelation, the Navy calls it a “time-critical” operation, which allows for less public input.

Second, the radiation level they propose to leave after the cleanup, 15 millirems, would vastly exceed the allowable risk to children under Washington’s Model Toxic Control Act.

Third, has the full extent of the spread of the contamination been determined? Families like mine, who have spent time at many different areas of the park, would like to know.
