U.S. is losing respect
You’re right to raise concern about strains with Germany. [“Editorial: The importance of strong U.S.-German ties,” Opinion, June 25.]
I visited a German friend in Cologne last month, who told me how distressed he was about the declining image of the U.S. in Germany. As a high-school teacher who has organized student exchanges with Northwest schools for decades, he was deeply disappointed at U.S. wars and drone attacks in the Middle East. Equally disappointing for him was the rapidly widening opportunity gap in the U.S.
It is not the same land that once inspired his admiration.
