Bike safety in Seattle

Added buffer could have helped

The Seattle Times has recently posted several letters concerning bike safety on city streets and to add to those voices I would point out a lack of foresight by Seattle’s Department of Transportation with regard to that issue. [“Northwest Voices: Bicycle safety in Seattle,” Opinion, Aug. 11.]

Rider safety on north-south routes in the city are important. Recently, two sections of such major routes in northeast Seattle — 30th Avenue Northeast and Sandpoint Way Northeast — were repaved.

For a minimal additional cost, the city could have widened the asphalt it laid by a couple of feet. That additional buffer would have added considerable safety for cyclists using those streets.
