Solution to gas tax initiative

Consider miles driven and gross vehicle weight

The current collection of gas tax and tolls to pay for our roads and bridges is unfair, unnecessary and downright silly [“Big issues remain, but Senate GOP open to gas-tax hike,” Online, Nov. 12].

There is a far simpler way that is equitable and would be very easy to implement. When we renew our annual tabs, each vehicle would be assessed an amount equal to the miles driven during the year (current odometer minus last year’s odometer) multiplied by the vehicle’s gross vehicle weight (GVW) multiplied by a factor set by the Legislature each year based on the state’s needs.

Certainly, there will be dishonest people who will register their vehicles out of state — such scofflaws already exist — but when they are caught, appropriate penalties would apply. Businesses should not complain since such costs are deductible. The fairness is evident: wear and tear on our highway infrastructure is directly proportional to both GVW and miles driven.
