Urban forest offers educational and ecological value

Corrected version

The article “Bothell acquires more land to preserve” [NWFriday, Jan. 3] was a good primer on the issues facing conservation in North Creek Forest.

The true community value of Bothell’s last urban forest is that it’s within walking distance of more than 9,000 people, from kindergartners to doctorate candidates. My staff has been in the forest with some of these students who are able to use this living laboratory thanks to strong support from the community and the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).

This project would not have been possible without the support of our elected officials like U.S. Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell.

The benefit of the LWCF goes far beyond preserving valuable natural spaces. Watching students in the forest, you can really see that being able to touch the dirt and plants, or observe the pileated woodpeckers and white tailed deer in their natural habitat helps them make connections between their textbook knowledge and the real world.

Joanna Grist, executive director Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition

Information in this letter, originally published Jan. 7, 2014, was corrected Jan. 7, 2014. A previous version of this letter incorrectly identified Maria Cantwell and a U.S. representative. She is a senator.
