Eastside Catholic: School had no choice but to fire Zmuda

I just read The Seattle Times article “Church doctrine, gay marriage colliding in Catholic workplaces” [Local News, Jan. 14]. I was a principal in the Catholic schools in Western Washington for 12 years and superintendent of the Catholic schools from 1989 to 1994. Therefore, I know the workings of the system. Even though a Catholic school is an independent Catholic school, such as Eastside Catholic, it still needs to abide by current church teaching.

Because of this, the principal and board sadly had no choice but to dismiss Mark Zmuda. If they had not, and word reached the office of the archbishop, they would have been told to dismiss him and would have had no choice in the matter.

I am very sorry about this. I am proud of the students, parents and alumni who, by contacting the local church authority, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and eventually the pope, are working to bring about a change in the church’s teaching on gay marriage.
