Voting rights: Make government more representative

Thank you for the story on the Washington Voting Rights Act [“State House Democrats push forward minority voting bill,” Local News, January 25.] As a young Latino who works in politics, I see the need for the Washington Voting Rights Act. When I meet legislators from across the state, school board members, or city council members, I rarely meet people who look like me.

Our state needs the Washington Voting Rights Act because it will instill hope within communities that have had their voices silenced by unfair election systems. The Washington Voting Rights Act can help clear the way for Latinos and other communities to join their city councils and school boards, which will help them springboard to higher office. I would like to see a Washington that is truly representative of its populace.
