Death penalty not a deterrent; brings justice to families

Death penalty not a deterrent

I’ll not argue that the death penalty may have helped with the Green River killer case [“The death penalty is an important tool of law enforcement,” Opinion, March 10]. I will however dispute U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert’s opinion that it makes us safer.

Texas continues to execute murderers by the hundreds. If it were a deterrent, then Texas should soon be running out of people to execute. Let’s call it what it is: retribution.

I happen to think there are better ways to treat murderers, such as life imprisonment without possibility of parole. Give them a lifetime to think about what they have done.

John Porter, Kirkland

Brings justice to families

I applaud Rep. Dave Reichert’s comments on the need to keep the death penalty as an important tool for justice.

I have made the same argument to foes of capital punishment. Having that “tool” hanging over the head of a killer like Gary Ridgway enabled the families of his victims to get the much needed closure that they wanted and deserved.
