Elephants do not belong in zoos [“Retire zoo elephants to a sanctuary,” Opinion, March 19].
Neither do giraffes, lions, hyenas or any other wild animal. Bringing children to a zoo does not stir support for wildlife conservation. It teaches them that animals are commodities to stare at or throw peanuts to, rather than sentient beings that suffer and feel pain.
Anyone who has seen a panther pacing back and forth behind a glass wall or a chain around an elephant’s leg, knows deep down inside that this is a primitive and immoral form of entertainment. If you want to see an elephant in the wild, go to Africa or watch one of the many fantastic wildlife documentaries.
