Health care: Numbers of enrolled don’t explain much

Columnist Danny Westneat writes, “Statewide, about 375,000 people have insurance due to health care reform” [”As GOP grumbles, many more now insured,” Local News, March 30]. I sure do. My individual policy was canceled, and I was offered a policy with a much higher deductible for double the premium. I was forced into the exchange, kicking and screaming. So yeah, count me as one of those who add to the purported success of Obamacare.

“The state doesn’t know how many of these people were previously uninsured,” Westneat writes. And why not? Simple, the exchange doesn’t ask applicants if they’ve had coverage. Insuring the uninsured is the goal here, yet no one is tracking it. They just point to the rising numbers on exchange plans as a barometer of the law’s success. But it isn’t.

If the “means” is the exchange and the “end” is more insured, then touting this means is justifying the pitiful end result.
