Danny Westneat completely misses the problem: Chasing demographic projections is a fools errand [“WWU’s president is right: The world is changing; deal with it,” Local News, April 22]
President Bruce Shepard should abandon his premise — “If we are as white in 10 years as we are today, Western will have failed as a university” — and instead focus on creating an institution that attracts students because of the quality of its instruction and access to opportunity for its alumni.
It is the hard work of building a great school that ensures success. Demographics change, but quality institutions remain sought after by all students, regardless of the color of their skin.
