Everest avalanche: Respect for Sherpas, help ensure support for families

A Nepalese government delegation meets with Sherpa mountain guides last week near Everest base camp in Nepal. (ADRIAN BALLINGER, ALPENGLOW EXPEDITIONS / AP)

We have all been affected by the tragedy that killed 13 members of the Sherpa community — three more remain missing and are presumed dead [“Many here work to help families of Sherpas killed on Everest,” Local News, April 24].

We appreciate those who have gracefully left the mountain to allow the families, friends and the Sherpa community to grieve and to show respect to Chomolungma (Everest), our “Mother Goddess of the Earth.”

Right now, support and respect for the families of those brave men who lost their lives, and those still missing, should trump all other concerns. There need to be more productive and constructive actions regarding labor issues, such as sufficient life insurance coverage and proper government compensations. This would help ensure that future disasters of this kind will not leave families destitute.

Most of these brave men were the sole providers of their families. While no one can bring them back, we should do all we can to help families move forward.
