Arab Spring: We shouldn’t support minority abuse

Guest columnist Shadi Hamid’s piece on the U.S. attitude toward Muslim governments is fine but fails to acknowledge the other horn of the dilemma [“Does the U.S. truly support democracy in Egypt?” Opinion, April 30]. How should the U.S. respond to a democratically elected theocracy that systematically abuses the minority?

The Egyptian military’s reaction to Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi was not made in a vacuum. If reports are to be believed, Morsi’s government engaged in horrific acts against political opponents and minorities including imprisonment and even death.

It would have been helpful if Hamid had also recognized this side.
