Memorial Day: Rein in war powers

After nearly 13 years of war, the number of people we mourn on Memorial Day has grown greatly [“On Memorial Day, honor service to the nation with silence,” Opinion, May 26]. Between invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, drone strikes in Pakistan and Yemen, “limited bombing campaigns” in Libya, and more, the U.S. has both caused too many deaths and suffered too many losses.

As the war in Afghanistan draws to a close, Congress needs to repeal the legislation that has given two presidents a blank check to wage war around the world. A recent vote in the U.S. House shows that there’s momentum to start reining in the president’s power.

My senators and representative should support legislation to repeal this blank check for war so that we can start to close this dark chapter in U.S. history.

Next Memorial Day, I hope we don’t have to remember even one more death because of the war on terror.

Saab Lofton, Seattle
