Seattle police reforms: Walk a mile in police officers’ shoes first

In Stephen K. Rice and Karen Collins Rice’s guest column on changing the Seattle Police Department’s culture they ask, “How have I contributed to, or detracted from, success?” [“How to change the culture of the Seattle Police Department,” Opinion, June 20].

I have one suggestion to the writers, as well as to City Council member Tim Burgess, monitor Merrick Bobb and anyone else who sits in a safe and cozy office while passing judgment on the police: get yourself onto the police force, join the police officers on the front lines of Seattle’s defense, face the bullets that the Seattle police routinely face, break up the armed robberies, respond to the gangland shootings, and then pass judgment on the police.

And until doing so, the guest columnists, Burgesses and Bobbs and their ilk might take a look at cultures where they don’t have the kind of police professionalism and protection that we take for granted here in Seattle.
