Methow mining: Preserve a ‘national treasure’

The Methow Valley is nothing less than a national treasure [“Canadian company hopes to find copper in Methow Valley,” Local News, July 5]. I have hunted, fished, camped and hiked up and down the beautiful valley for almost 70 years and know it well. If you have never been there, put a visit to the area on your bucket list.

The Forest Service says it cannot stop the mining. How is that even possible? If the mining is to be done on public land and the public says no to mining, end of the story, or should be. We simply cannot allow government bureaucrats and weak-kneed politicians to make these kinds of decisions that could turn the Methow into Appalachia.

Power to the people. Put it to a vote.
