I had to read the letter to the editor featured in the Friday paper twice to make sure it wasn’t being satirical [“I-594 is the repressive anti-gun legislation,” Northwest voices, July 10]. It claims that it would be an oppressive, anti-gun proposal to require background checks on all gun purchasers.
Why is this? Because our law-enforcement officers could not sell their privately owned guns to people without a background check. How many police officers do in fact feel a need to dump their firearms into the hands of a complete stranger? Any rational person who actually cares about the lives of our children and the safety of our community would vote in favor of comprehensive background checks.
