Primary election: Peterson the better pick for District 21 because he collaborates

This is a note to underscore my unqualified support for Strom Peterson for District 21 [“The Times recommends in District 21 races Scott Whelpley, Lillian Ortiz-Self,” Opinion, July 16].

The Times is right to focus on the need to send people to Olympia who can reduce partisanship. However, it is unrealistic to expect someone with virtually no experience to make an impact. Campaign promises are no substitute for experience in an elected position.

Making an impact comes from relationships — existing ones and building on those so that one can engage entrenched representatives with credibility and support. Peterson has demonstrated clearly that he is an attentive and respectful listener, and an elected official who fully realizes collaboration is critical to governing. There are five admirable candidates for this position, and Strom is the clear No. 1.
