Children crossing the border: Show some compassion

My deep gratitude for The Seattle Times’ excellent coverage of the heartbreaking events happening along our southern border, where children are fleeing El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala due to horrific violence and suffering at the hands of powerful drug cartels supplying users in the U.S. with illegal drugs [“269 children from border surge taken in by Northwest states,” Local News, July 24].

Accounts are appalling of extremists, calling themselves Christian, who line the streets, shouting with hatred at these new arrivals to “Go home!”  This egregious behavior is the antithesis of the heart of the gospel of Jesus, who welcomed children; it’s the antithesis of Jewish and Muslim teaching and that of all major world religions, which call us to welcome the alien and the stranger, to love our neighbor, to be mercifuI.

I hope President Obama will visit the border to enflesh the words of welcome written on our Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor …”
