Universal pre-K: After-school programs important as well

Letter writer Jack McCarthy didn’t fully explain why parents of disadvantaged families are unable to provide their children with pre-K school as well as education support during their school years [“Good preschool is an ‘academic rocket boost’,” Northwest Voices, Aug. 11].

Many disadvantaged parents are poorly educated themselves and might not value education as compared with parents who do.

If the government is going to step in and provide part-time pre-K educational support for disadvantaged students, then it should consider providing full-time pre-K educational support before and after normal school hours as well.
