Ferguson: Political candidates need to step up

The editorial board misses important things in its analysis of the causes of the mayhem in Ferguson, Mo. [“Racial disparities are behind Ferguson unrest,” Opinion, Aug. 21] The good citizens of Yakima have no one to blame but themselves for the makeup of their city council. You want someone with a certain look to serve? Run for office, register to vote, and do it. Problem solved. Yes, it is that simple. Yes, they can! Can’t the ACLU sue the people of Yakima to get them to participate?

It’s the same in Ferguson. They are our fellow Americans and should participate — run for office, register to vote and do it. They have the city council and police force their civic apathy helped to create.

But, the most important thing missing was any mention of the true beauty emanating from that battered little town. You failed to mention the good people cleaning up daily the mess left by looters and rioters trashing their own town, the woman pleading with the QuikTrip owners to come back and rebuild, the young man offering a police officer a rose.
