Seattle Police already reaching out to diverse communities

While work remains to build SPD into the best police service in the nation, our outreach to the diverse communities of Seattle is vast [“In wake of Ferguson, expand Seattle police outreach to more communities of color,” Opinion, Aug. 28].

Some of the ways that SPD reaches out to engage these communities include:

  • Demographic advisory councils, which serve populations from Sikhs and East Africans to our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community and Native Americans.
  • The Living Room Conversation program that brings neighbors together with the officers in their neighborhood to build relationships.
  • Our series of “Find It, Fix It” walks, where residents work with police and city services to improve their neighborhoods.
  • The 11-week and single-day community police academies.
  • Beginning a process to hire SPD’s first-ever East African community liaison.
  • The Refugee Women’s Institute, which will build trust and relationships between the immigrant community and SPD.
  • Ongoing development of neighborhood-specific community precinct safety plans under Chief Kathleen O’Toole and each precinct captain.

I agree that it’s in our best interest to maintain strong relations with all communities and I see SPD actively working to engage with the public.

Ed Murray, Mayor of Seattle
