Fight against Islamic State: U.S. is caught in balancing act

Our latest war in Iraq and Syria is indeed a strange operation [“Weapons use in Syria airstrikes outpaces raids on Islamic State in Iraq,” Nation & World, Sept. 24]. We bomb, but there seems to be no attempt at stopping other countries in the Middle East from supplying funds or to stop them buying the oil that the Islamic State is selling.

I am referring specifically to our “allies,” namely Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey. We are so careful to avoid Iran and Syria as allies. Is this a serious war on the Islamic State, or it is mostly a big balancing act where we are trying to be on the right side of corrupt Arab governments for the perpetuation of our own empire?
