Islamic State: The U.S. has a hypocritical policy on human rights

I find it harder and harder to take the president seriously on matters of foreign policy [“Egyptian extremists may be copying Islamic State’s brutal methods,” Nation & World, Sept. 28].

He wants me to be outraged about something he calls Islamic State, and he doesn’t want me to be outraged about something we all call the government of Egypt. The military dictatorship in Egypt commits more gross abuses of human rights every day than the Islamic State does in a month. Why am I supposed to be outraged by one, the lesser one at that, but not the other?

I am supposed to be outraged at the extrajudicial killing of journalists, which is of course outrageous, but I am not supposed to be outraged when the president uses his power to kill American citizens extrajudicially (he has used drones to kill four American citizens).

I think something is seriously wrong with our values when we go to war when war obviously cannot solve the problem, and simultaneously give attack helicopters to even worse criminals.
