Monorail ballot measure: Maglev trains would be the better solution

Seattle’s existing monorail line currently travels from Seattle Center to Westlake Center. (Ellen M. Banner / The Seattle Times)

I oppose monorail. [“Reject ballot measure to expand monorail,” Opinion, Oct. 6]. I have ridden trains around the world — monorails, subways, light rail, cable cars and even funiculars. I have studied and compared them. I conclude that monorail is not the solution. It is an old technology. It runs on truck tires.

But light rail is not the solution either, especially for the Ballard-West Seattle route. It would require too much tunneling, bulldozing, fencing and demolition.

Maglev is the solution. Maglev has no moving parts, and there is no wheel-to-rail contact, so it is super-quiet and requires less maintenance than monorail or light rail. It can run elevated, at ground level and through tunnels. The right-of-way is mostly free.

Monorail was voted down in 2005. We have a second chance to get it right.

It should be funded with a Seattle-only sales tax, not a car-tab tax, which people hate.

Who should build it? Not a new agency, but Sound Transit, which should admit that Maglev is simply the best technology for the corridor that needs to be served and to build it.

Vote for monorail but build maglev.
