Indigenous Peoples’ Day: Choose a different day than Columbus Day

On Oct. 6, the Seattle City Council unanimously declared the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the City of Seattle, and encouraged other institutions to recognize the Day — reaffirming the city’s commitment to promote the well-being and growth of Seattle’s American Indian and Indigenous community [“Seattle council faces backlash from Italian-American group,” Local News, Oct. 9].

Thus, Columbus Day, a day that celebrates the accomplishments and rich heritage of Italian Americans, was eliminated and not moved to another date. Even though there are already two days on the calendar celebrating Native Americans, the Seattle City Council and the mayor, in their rush to be politically correct and pander to a small, vocal group, defamed all Italian Americans. The Seattle City Council could have added one of these two Native American days to the calendar.

In California and South Dakota, the fourth Friday of September is Native American Day. In Maryland, the Friday after Thanksgiving is Native American Day. Seattle could have easily chosen one of these days Indigenous Peoples’ Day for Seattle. They could have shown true leadership and worked on getting Olympia to make one of these days a State holiday. But no, they instead choose the politically correct way out.
