Mental health: End the stigma by treating all mental illnesses equally

The editorial “Ending exclusions under state’s mental-health parity law” [Opinion, Oct. 14] truly illustrates how crucial it is for the local government to intervene and support individuals who live with mental illness through all sorts of treatments. Courts are now needed to make sure insurance options are more inclusive and mental-health treatment is not denied.

One way to end stigma is to treat all mental illness equally and to create a more supportive and accessible network for all people. I think it is important to continue advocating for the lack of resources and possibilities for individuals who live with a mental illness to access services from a very young age, and to inform the insurance companies that they should not be allowed to limit mental-health services.

Now, more than ever, it is necessary to expand mental-health services and provide everyone, from children to older adults, the opportunity to recover and feel like they are successful individuals who belong to society, and not stigmatized people who are unable to receive services.
