Advisory Vote No. 8: Marijuana is already overtaxed

I don’t understand The Seattle Times’ logic in supporting Advisory Vote No. 8, the law that excludes state licensed marijuana farmers from agricultural tax advantages [“The Times recommends to maintain Advisory Vote No. 8 on marijuana tax,” Opinion. Oct. 14].

The Times writes, “Initiative 502, rightly puts pot alongside alcohol as an adult indulgence that should be taxed.” If that is the case, why do we allow vineyards to benefit from the agricultural tax benefits? The wine produced is taxed at 20 percent; the excise tax on marijuana is already 75 percent.

Like the wine industry, pot farming has the potential to create thousands of good jobs and millions in state income. But not if farmers are taxed to annihilation. They are already excluded from writing off business expenses for federal taxes. These are farmers, who buy tractors and fencing like any other farmer. Yes, please tax them right alongside alcohol producers — vote no on Advisory Vote No. 8.
