Seattle pre-K measures: Need more than a pilot program

When we know what works and can be implemented for the greatest good, why not do that instead of embarking on yet another “pilot” program that would most likely show what we have known for a long time: Teachers, who are well-prepared in early childhood education, paid as professionals and supported as they implement best practices in working with children and their families, have and will produce desirable outcomes [“Proposition 1B wouldn’t help at-risk children,” Opinion, Thursday]. This was my experience during 26 years of teaching in the Early Childhood Care and Education program at Seattle Central College.

Let the UW early childhood program do research, which certainly needs to continue and can be transmitted through professional development activities for those in the field.

There are too many children on waiting lists. Their teachers, including caregivers and parents, need support right now. This should not have to wait for years to deliver.
