Gun control and I-594: Making our schools safer

As a mother, grandmother, teacher and concerned citizen, I plan on voting yes on Initiative 594 [“Law would punish family members sharing guns,” Northwest Voices, Oct. 25].   I joined Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America after the Sandy Hook school shooting. Having to decide in a split second whether to take a bullet to shield a student seems to have become the new norm in this country for both school staff and students, with 87 incidents involving guns being discharged in our schools since Sandy Hook.

Initiative 594 would make our schools safer by closing the loophole that allows dangerous people to easily buy guns without a background check. We know background checks work. In the states with background checks on all handgun sales, there are 38 percent fewer women shot to death by their intimate partners and 39 percent fewer law-enforcement officers murdered with handguns.

While legislative bodies seem to be paralyzed, we the people can embrace our common humanity to make a difference as we address complex issues confronting society. Initiative 594 would help reduce gun violence and save lives. This is a citizen’s initiative and we have a chance to make a real difference in Washington for our communities and our schools.
