Midterm elections: The need to return to democracy

Voters have replaced enough Democratic U.S. Senators to give the Republicans a majority and retained the Republican majority in the House [“Republicans making powerful bid for Senate control,” Nation & World, Nov. 4]. One possible explanation is voters were dissatisfied with the president’s style and substance of governing. It’s hard to believe voters were not also dissatisfied with the inability of the president and Congress to solve the myriad of questions awaiting solution.

As one of those voters I am expecting action. The burden is on both the president and Congress to find solutions to multiple domestic issues, including improving the economy, addressing the widening income gap and fair and meaningful tax reform. Additionally, the immigration issues in this country are crying out for a humane solution.

I am hoping for a return of this country to a democracy, instead of the wealth-dominated oligarchy we have become.
