Midterm election: Our own system of politics is rundown

I found Nicholas Kristof’s column “America’s broken political system” [Opinion, Nov. 7] to be spot on. How disheartened do Americans have to become before we can transform this out-of-control wrecking ball?

Despite approval ratings that are in the cellar, we continue to sustain this highly paid group of bullies and mud wrestlers. We have a strong initiative to remove bullying from our schools, as the results of allowing it to occur are so clearly detrimental. Yet, our elected officials are considered remiss by their own parties if they don’t engage in that behavior assiduously. What wonderful role models.

President George W. Bush once depicted America’s mission as that of spreading democracy throughout the world. Given our own democratic model, I’m afraid we are trying to clad the world in the mud-stained clothing of our in-house combatants.

How do you sell democracy to the world if it appears to be getting marketed through a rundown storefront?
