Climate change: Praise for Gov. Jay Inslee

I am extremely pleased with the leadership Jay Inslee has shown on climate change [“Inslee climate push to go beyond carbon pricing,” Local News, Nov. 17]. We need more elected representatives who have the courage to do what’s right for our state, now and in the future.

That said, I would encourage the governor to support a revenue-neutral carbon tax rather than cap and trade. The conventional wisdom is that a tax won’t fly with conservatives or the public, but that calculus changes if it is revenue-neutral.

Tax the carbon, return the revenue to Washington householders, like Alaska’s oil dividend, and let the market make the decisions about which technologies to support. Consumers will be protected against higher prices and will have an incentive to switch to carbon-neutral sources of energy.

Again, hats off to Jay Inslee for his continued work on climate.

Julie Alexander, Seattle
