Student-athletes: Paying college athletes disincentivizes drive to professional level

In response to Jonathan Martin’s post, “Should college athletes be paid for their performance?” [Opinion, Northwest, Oct. 30], I do not think that college student-athletes should get paid for playing on their school’s sports team. I understand the idea that these players are employees, but they should be in school for education. Playing sports is their passion, not their jobs. If they make it far enough to make it to a professional league, then they should get paid. They are students withg the intent to gain an education, with sports on the side.

If you were to pay athletes, would everyone be paid the same? Would the quarterback be paid the same as the safety? Would female athletes makes as much as male athletes?

Getting a scholarship is a big accomplishment. Let’s not overdo it by then paying students to play sports. As soon as we start paying students to play sports for a school, we sacrifice the passion and possibly the drive it takes to make it a career at a professional level.
