Duwamish cleanup: A clean river makes sense for Seattle’s future

The Duwamish River is still alive, despite pollution and habitat loss from a century of development [“Why the EPA’s plan is the best way forward for the Duwamish River,” Opinion, Dec. 3]. Our region should support the new cleanup plan so that we can make the Duwamish a special place again.

A clean river would benefit the salmon that still swim upstream to spawn in the Duwamish and its headwater streams. Reducing pollutant flow from the Duwamish into Puget Sound would help our endangered orcas recover. Cleanup would also improve the health of people who live along the river and depend on the Duwamish for food.

The decisions that led to a toxic river made sense at the time, and the cleanup plan makes sense today. The Duwamish has lived, produced and suffered along with the people of Seattle, and we need a clean Duwamish as part of our future.

I look forward to the day we can celebrate the Duwamish as the cleanest urban river in the nation, home to thriving salmon populations and the centerpiece of a vibrant community and productive economy.
