Ferguson protests: A need for body cameras

In the article posted about the militarization of police forces, I found a few of the points intriguing [“Obama pushes body cams and broad police reform,” Nation & World, Dec. 1]. I think that there needs to be greater trust between police officers and civilians.

I think that the transparency that would be provided by body cameras would greatly help promote this trust. When discrepancies arise between civilian testimonies and officer testimonies, it makes people think that someone is lying, and civilians might be likely to side with fellow civilians rather than officers. With body cameras, these discrepancies would stop cropping up in reports.

Also, when the article discusses the fact that some police forces are becoming over militarized, I don’t think that this would be a huge problem as long as that trust exists. As a civilian, I don’t have a problem with heavily armed police officers if I know that they are being held accountable and I can trust them.
