Ferguson protests: Silence not an option

The Seattle Times editorial “Seattle’s Ferguson-related protests are doing more harm than good” [Opinion, Dec. 3] perfectly illustrated the misconceptions that have surrounded the Ferguson protests.

While there have been hundreds of people protesting peacefully the murder (and yes, the fatal shooting of an unarmed boy should have been termed murder), The Seattle Times focuses on the few protesters who have behaved aggressively, letting these outliers overshadow and put into question the legitimacy of the entire movement.

To belittle the Ferguson protests by questioning their merit and by implying that peaceful protesters are rebelling for the sake of “Seattle’s persistent current of youthful protestations” rather than exercising their right to free speech and standing up for what they believe in is to spit in the faces of those who have suffered under police violence.

In light of the cases of the unarmed Michael Brown, Eric Garner, 12-year-old Tamir Rice and countless others, what we need is more peaceful protesting of unjust state action. Silence and ignorance in the face of injustice are privileges that The Seattle Times would do well to stop endorsing.
