When the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Dr. Vivek Murthy as the new surgeon general [“Senate approves Obama pick for surgeon general,” Nation & World, Dec. 15], the American people gained a vibrant spokesman and strong proponent of our public health.
As the youngest surgeon general in history, he will bring entrepreneurial and organizational skills. He is known as a person of integrity who leads not through authority or rank but through example and engagement.
His confirmation is a testament not only to his quiet determination, but also to the advocacy of doctors across the country who believe in his vision for a more just, affordable health-care system.
And now, let us all roll up our sleeves and work with him to improve the health of our nation.
