Kalakala: Politicians need to take a risk and stand up for its restoration

Working in Seattle in the late 1990s, I would follow the The Seattle Times coverage on the heroic efforts to return the Kalakala from Kodiak, Alaska. A great story, it had the capacity to inspire others to care for their surroundings and the everyday items that make our cities great places to live and work.

Back now working in Belfast, Northern Ireland, my local government have bought and salvaged the SS Nomadic, a supply vessel from 1911 that was associated with the Titanic. This was also a very expensive project that made little sense and drew much criticism at the wasteful expense of madcap politicians. However, restored to a very high standard today, this is a very worthwhile piece of our tourist infrastructure. Those politicians with the foresight to stand up and take the risks to do something good despite much criticism, some of it very hostile, are now lauded for their great endeavors.

It is sad that Seattle cannot keep the oddity that is the Kalakala. It would have been an amazing asset if restored.
