Massive rent increases make the case for rent control

The rent increases that The Seattle Times reported taking place at the Linda Manor Apartments are unfair and should be illegal [“Rents rising quickly as older buildings change hands,” Business, Jan. 12].
Renters should not have to pay for bad investments made by real-estate speculators. Bauhaus Partners knew going into this purchase what the current rents were and what the cash flow would be at these rents. Still, it went ahead with the purchase figuring: Oh well, we’ll just jack up the rents and break even.
What has happened at the Linda Manor Apartments clearly illustrates why it is important to have rent control in Seattle. Rent control, when done properly, would protect renters from the type of rent gouging that Bauhaus Partners is engaging in, while allowing for an equatable rent increase to keep up with area rental rates.
