White House drone crash: Establish rules and licensing for drones

I read with interest the article on the quadcopter that landed on the White House grounds [“The drone debate hits close to home for White House,” Nation & World, Jan. 26].

If laws are not enacted to deal with the potential problems of these commercially available drones, how long until we hear of commercial aircraft being brought down in a tragic accident caused by some drone pilot infringing on commercial air space? Why can’t the rules and licensing for these aircraft be the same as for helicopters and their pilots?

Those of you rolling your eyes at that prospect should watch video of an encounter between a drone and a news helicopter at the Seahawk departure celebration or read the news articles about people being arrested for shining laser pointers at pilots of aircraft landing at Sea-Tac. Never underestimate the stupidity of some people.
