I just read The Seattle Times article “Church doctrine, gay marriage colliding in Catholic workplaces” [Local News, Jan. 14]. I was a principal in the Catholic schools in Western Washington for 12 years and superintendent of the Catholic schools from 1989 to 1994. Therefore, I know the workings of the system. Even though…More

Zmuda’s firing is a travesty on the teachings of Christ
I am writing to express my support for reinstating Mark Zmuda as vice principal at Eastside Catholic High School [“Reinstate Mark Zmuda at Eastside Catholic High School, Opinion, Jan. 3”].
Many churches have lost their vision and understanding of Missio Dei (God’s Mission).
It appears that the cultural leaders promoting the propaganda myth about the majority of Americans endorsing gay marriage have been dealt a setback from the “Duck Dynasty” controversy [“Reality has it risks,” Opinion, Dec. 26].
Proponents of the myth have used it to foster a sense of cultural superiority to oppress anyone who dares to take a different view. I’ve repeatedly exposed the myth as both false and intentionally manipulative.
The majority of emails and letters we received over the weekend concerned the dismissal of gay vice principal Mark Zmuda. Here are 3 reader submissions:
The real outrage at Eastside Catholic High School is not the firing of the vice principal, it is the lack of moral formation shown in the rallies [“Thanks to the Students of Eastside Catholic,” Opinion, Dec. 20, 2013].
This is a common problem. That is why the pope called for a new evangelism. The Ten Commandments are binding on all people. Christians are not to be conformed to the world. The idea that the church needs to change to conform to the world violates scripture.
Friday will be the last day at Eastside Catholic for vice principal and swim coach Mark Zmuda, 38, who joined the staff about a year and a half ago. Whether Zmuda left voluntarily or was forced out, once he married another man his fate at the school was sealed. Eastside Catholic High School says Mark Zmuda’s marriage to his same-sex partner violates Catholic teachings and a contract he signed when he was hired by the school. Students called the rule “totally unfair” and walked out of class in protest on Thursday.
The Seattle Times editorial board writes, “The hearts and minds of many young Catholics are changing. The students’ rebellion should provoke an institution that preaches compassion to also accept that individuals have a right to marry the person they love.”
Readers are writing in on the topic, voicing support for the students or framing gay marriage as anathema to biblical teachings:
To the students of Eastside Catholic: I applaud your expression of love and support for your vice principal [“Catholic school vice principal ousted over his gay marriage,” page one, Dec. 20, 2013].
However, I would urge restraint in your pleas to change church policy. Primarily because your real dispute is not with the church leadership but with the Bible itself.
