Open Internet: Regulatory bodies beholden to those they regulate

Gabriel Campanario / The Seattle Times

The Opinion pages on Sunday provided a great background on the raging battle over the future of access to information in the U.S.

Chuck Aaron’s piece [“The day we lost the Internet, Opinion, Feb. 1] outlined the current state of affairs and the dangers that lie ahead for affordable access to information for the public if the FCC rolls over on this.

Then we have Michael K. Powell’s explanation of how good we have it under the thumb of Comcast, Time Warner, et al. [“U.S. a leader for the ‘open Internet’, Northwest Voices, Feb. 2].

Ostensibly, the role of the various regulatory agencies — USDA, FDA, FCC, etc. — is to protect the interests of the commons, perhaps for the cause of a more perfect union.
