Potential repercussions are significant
Kudos for your editorial about the Olympic bid [“Olympics? No thanks,” Opinion, March 28].
Having just finished working at my 10th Olympiad in London, I can verify the numbers and concerns you outlined. Since helping make K2 Skis the official skis of the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics, I have seen many of the host difficulties firsthand.
Financial, political and business-wise, hosting the event is a huge gamble and seldom has it been a successful venture on all fronts. London came about as close as you can get.
I have already met with some of those who are looking at the prospects for Seattle and shared The Times editorial board’s and my views with them. There are a lot of ways to spend our money in a much more beneficial way. A bid can cost millions, even when it’s bare-bones. And the business community is much less inclined to participate in a big way because of the financial climate.
Thanks for bringing to light the potential repercussions of starting down the Olympic road.
