Israel-Palestinian conflict: A re-imagined Middle East that would ensure peace

It is inconceivable that the situation in the Middle East will ever be resolved by negotiation with Israel, as is quite evident from all that has transpired since Israel’s formal establishment in 1948. There must be a comprehensive solution imposed upon the territory in a more equitable fashion. The problem arises from the arbitrary allocation of…

Israel-Palestinian conflict: While Hamas spins story, Palestinians die

Maybe letter writer Michelle Ryder would feel better if the Israelis stayed outside so they might be killed by missiles instead of going into bomb shelters [“Israel has a massive, unfair advantage,” Northwest Voices, July 18]. Or shut down the Iron Dome till Israeli deaths equaled Palestinian deaths. Or build bomb shelters in…

Israel-Palestinian conflict: Israel has a massive, unfair advantage

An AP story about Israel’s Iron Dome mislead readers by claiming it gives Israel an “edge” in the conflict ["Israel's 'Iron Dome' changes the face of battle," Nation & World, July 10]. This word is a curious choice because it implies both sides are evenly matched. Nothing could be more wrong. Israel has not…

Israel-Palestinian conflict: Media make victims of Gaza residents and Hamas

The casualties and loss of life in the struggle for peace between Israel and the Hamas-controlled Gaza strip are in clear view, yet the several hundred lives lost in Gaza takes on even greater significance than the 150,000 lives lost in Syria [“Israel invades Gaza after Hamas rejects truce,” Nation & World, July…

Israeli-Palestinian conflict: Consider issues from both sides

I commend U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for his condemnation of Hamas’ acts of firing missiles indiscriminately into Israel [“Despite offensive, Gaza rockets still hit Israel,” Nation & World, July 14]. However, I am concerned about his objections of Israel’s right to retaliate in force. Many so-called liberals (and I consider myself one) look at…

SodaStream does some real good in the West Bank

Oxfam supports a boycott of SodaStream and would not allow its global ambassador, actress Scarlett Johansson, to do ads for the company [“Scarlett Johansson resigns from Oxfam over Israel flap,” Movies, Jan. 30].

SodaStream is the largest private employer of Palestinians in the West Bank. Palestinians, Druze and Jews work together in SodaStream’s West Bank factory and all workers receive health insurance and good pay. Unemployment is high among Palestinians in the West Bank, so workers say they appreciate their jobs, especially jobs that pay four or five times average pay in the area.

Retailers should remove SodaStream from inventories

I was glad to see The Seattle Times cover Scarlett Johansson’s choice of personal profit over human rights [“Scarlett Johansson resigns from Oxfam over Israel flap,” Movies, Jan. 30]. Johansson parted ways with humanitarian organization Oxfam in favor of her lucrative association with Israeli settlement-based company SodaStream. Her decision came on the heels of…

Israel-Palestinian peace deal: Israelis need more assurances

On Jan. 11, The Times published an article [“Israel says it will build new homes in West Bank,” Nation & World] on the position of Israel’s Labor Party leader Isaac Herzog: that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu understands the need for a peace deal with the Palestinian Arabs, but does not have the guts…
